It comprehensively covers the key technologies of guidance, navigation and control (GNC) system design for spacecraft in elliptical orbits, including the orbit design, formation configuration design and maintenance, autonomous navigation technology and relative navigation technology, as well as autonomous rendezvous technology. The methods that this book introduces are very close to actual practical engineering applications and presented in an accessible style.

This book was compiled from contributions given at the 7th IAA Symposium on Small Satellites for Earth Observation, May 4–8, 2009, Berlin (IAA – International Academy of Astronautics). From the 15 sessions for oral presentations and two poster sessions, 52 contributions were selected which are representative for the new developments and trends in the area of small satellites for Earth observation. They re ect the potentials of a diversity of missions and related technologies. This may be based on national projects or international co-operations, single satellites of constellations, pico-, nano-, micro- or mini-satellites, developed by companies, research institutions or agencies. The main focus is on new missions to monitor our Earth’s resources (Part I), and the environment in which our Earth is emb- ded (Part II). Part III deals with distributed space systems, a unique feature of small satellites and in most cases impractical to do with large satellites. Here we concentrate on constellations of satellites with focus on future missions relying on co-operating satellites. For all the new developments and projects we need well e- cated specialists coming from the universities. Many universities included already the development and implementation of small satellites in their curriculum. The u- versity satellites chapter (Part IV) shows the high quality which is already reached by some of the universities worldwide.

“TT&C” is the abbreviation of tracking, telemetry and command. “Spacecraft information transmission” refers to the mutual transmission of information acquired from or generated by spacecraft and ground station. With the development of technologies, TT&C and information transmission have been organically linked, in that they are complementary in functions, unified in signal design and integrated in equipment. In addition, telemetry and telecommand are essentially a kind of information transmission. From the view of development, information warfare and integrated electronic information system require that TT&C and information transmission be designed on a unified basis and integrated into a single device. Therefore, this book highlights the characteristics of the combination ofTT&C and information transmission with the latter being particularly emphasized. Based on the practices of the author in developing various TT&C equipment over many years and trying to combine theory with the practices, the book focuses on the basic technologies commonly applied for C&T system of various vehicles, with the intention to help the readers to obtain deeper understanding about TT&C systems and provide them with a theoretical basis for resolving practical engineering problems.
